Saintly Flavours: A Gourmet Gift Set with a Divine Twist

Jeremy Bonggu Kang's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Catholicism

Jeremy Bonggu Kang's gourmet food gift set, Saintly Flavours, combines the rich tradition of high-quality food made by medieval monasteries with a modern, luxurious aesthetic. Inspired by the 2018 Met Gala fashion theme of Catholicism, Kang's design won the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2020.

Food and the act of eating have become increasingly fashionable, and Kang's design taps into this trend. The name of the brand, Saintly Flavours, represents the values of Catholicism such as Meditation, Benediction, Generosity, Moderation, Patience, Reward, Happiness, and Integrity. Each product in the gift set is named after one of seven Abbeys in France, further reinforcing the theme.

The design of the project focuses on creating an artistic and luxurious look to catch the eyes of high-end consumers. The ornate and traditional style of illustrations conveys the theme of Catholicism. Not only was the logo for the brand made in an etching style illustration, but detailed illustrations of each Abbey were placed in medieval style hand drawn flames on the front of the label. The package was designed to serve a decorative purpose by itself while and after using it.

To give an artistic and luxurious look, thick papers with textures like an artist's sketchbook were used as the boxes and labels of each product of the gift set. The gift set includes two wine bottles (one red wine and one white wine), one cracker box, and three jam jars, all stacked up like an architecture inside the fitted outer container.

The project started and finished in 2018 in Vancouver. One of the challenges of the project was to balance the beauty and fanciness of the ornamental elements from the rich tradition and the modern luxury appealing contemporary consumers. The usage of the chosen typeface and the mindful composition of graphic elements helped to win the balanced look of the outcome.

Saintly Flavours is a gourmet food gift set that targets the consumers of high-end shops. Jeremy Bonggu Kang tried to create a look that catches the eyes of the high-end shop consumers, using the ornate and traditional etching style of illustrations to represent the rich tradition of art and high-quality food making in Catholic Monasteries. The design was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
